I’ve compiled a list of things that will help you when you book in a massage. From pre-massage to during, after and beyond! All broken down into a helpful list. No particular order of importance but worth checking them all out! If you have more questions feel free to get in touch with us!

Prior to your massage...

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Shower

Fill in the Intake or Existing Client Form that was (hopefully) sent to your email address

Hydrate

Use the bathroom if needed

Ask any questions you have before your session if you are unsure about something

During your massage...

Don't be afraid to ask for more or less pressure!

Let the therapist know if you are uncomfortable for any reason or need a break etc.

If something feels good or bad, feel free to express yourself so that the therapist can better calibrate technique and pressure.

Your sinuses may become blocked in a prone position, this is completely normal and is a result of extra pressure in the head and neck.

You may fall asleep, this is a normal reaction when you are feeling relaxed.

You may not be used to being touched, and at first it can feel uncomfortable, but this will pass.

It can feel quite tender at certain points if you have not had a massage in some time, this is completely normal and will ease off.

You can advise your therapist if you want to extend your appointment to be massaged for longer and most therapists will happily do so if they can fit things in.

Following your massage...

You may feel like you have been hit by a small locomotive train, this does happen from time to time, the reasoning is quite indepth, but in short, your circulation has increased somewhat, and now your body is in a state of repair and rejuvination and it is essentially cleaning house at a rapid rate. This will pass within the same day, with rest and hydration.

You will also feel slight dehydration due to muscles and tissues that have been relaxed and soothed are now beginning to hydrate themselves with available fluids, causing a temporary shortage. You will need to hydrate after your massage to feel better.

You can feel invigorated or somewhat flat and tired, this is completely normal and the response will depend on what is happening in your body prior to your session.

The next day, you may feel sore and tender, this is especially true if it has been some time since your last massage or you have asked me to use extra firm or deep pressure. It will ease off within 24 Hours, however you can speed this process up with a hot shower or bath.

Following intense head, neck and shoulder work, you can experience a headache which comes about because of the elastic response of muscles and tissues. Heat therapy and taking paracetamol/ibuprofen will reduce this response. It is also equally important to hydrate with several cups of water + a salted meal.

You can also feel dizzy when you get go to get off the table, this is completely normal and is a result of the sharp blood pressure change from prolonged lying to sitting up, make sure you take your time getting up!

That just about covers it. For more questions to be answered, feel free to visit our FAQ page here
