What happens after your massage?

It’s not uncommon for me to get clients in who have never had a massage before, or people who don’t really know what happens to you after getting a massage for an hour or more. I wanted to make a small post just detailing some of the good things that happen after you do get a treatment. Massage has many benefits and can honestly do so much for you no matter where you’re at in your life.

Here we go, the Top 10 Benefits following a massage session.

  1. Stress Relief - After your massage, you should feel a little lighter, both in your body and in your mind. Most of stress hormone levels in the body have lowered during your treatment and will continue to stay low for some time afterwards, this is why you feel so much better after a massage!

  2. Lower Blood Pressure - Because the body is put into a relaxed state during a massage session, your blood pressure actually drops a significant amount, this is a good thing as it will take some stress off the circulatory system and give it time to just be at a base level for a little while.

  3. Better posture - When you get a treatment, even a general one, your posture will improve. Muscles will be able to fire and activate better, allowing for better posture and re-alignment of certain joints.

  4. Better Circulation - Circulation improves during massage, but afterwards this affects the body in a robust way. Your tissues will heal quicker, replenish more effectively, waste will begin to be circulated out and your general body functioning will improve.

  5. Increased Joint Range of motion - Joints suffer wear and tear over time and degrade as we age. This is completely normal, however sometimes joints suffer from exacerbated wear when they are restricted, unable to move fully and properly. When you get a treatment, those joints will begin to open up and give you better movement and mobility within them, thus staving off early degradation.

  6. Improve headaches - Headaches are complicated, they can come about fast and sharply for a number of reasons. The good news is tension headaches will be taken care of with direct neck, head and shoulder massage. If you have blood pressure related headaches, they will also reduce for a little while because your blood pressure will be lower following a massage!

  7. Improves sleep - Massage strokes can be quite soothing, so soothing infact that it’s possible to fall asleep during your session! Usually after a massage you’ll feel quite tired and sleepy. This is a completely normal response and typically you will have a much deeper and more restorative sleep following a massage.

  8. Reduces Anxiety and Fatigue - Many of the clients we see report a greater sense of well being after their treatment. The body is put into a relaxed state and from there much of the mental strains that were previously bothering you will go away. The body is very much in a restorative state following massage therapy.

  9. Pain Relief - One of the better benefits of massage is that if you had pain prior to a treatment, often it will go away during the session and remain gone for some time after. Pain receptors are lulled to sleep, tissue blockages have been removed and muscles that were overtight have become loose and mobile. Pain turns to tension and tension turns to relaxation.

  10. Lymphatic System Enhancement - The lymphatic system is responsible for cleaning up the waste in your body. When you get some much needed massage therapy, you can quite often feel like you’ve been really rundown and experience a wave of fatigue afterwards. This is your body going through a natural and enhanced process to clean up the house essentially. The lymphatic system is circulating at a greater and more efficient rate and dealing with wastage. This feeling will go away after a goods night rest.

When you book in for a treatment, you’ll also get a handy sheet with more information about everything massage related to help fill you in about the process !
